CEM 11 Plus
The 11+ information site providing Children's Educational Material for the 11+
covering 11+ grammar school entrance exams.

The Walsall11plus.co.uk website provides advice and information about Walsall 11+ exams and Children's Educational Material for the 11+. The Walsall 11+ website includes advice on how to prepare for Walsall eleven plus exams and material suitable for preparation.

There are 2 single gender grammar schools in Walsall and the are part of the Shropshire, Woverhampton & Walsall consortium and education is free. They are not just concerned with academic excellence,  each school offers a wide range of extra curricular activities and pupils have opportunities to participate at all levels in sport, music and drama in addition to their academic education.

The Consortium shares the same test as the Torbay and Devon Consortium, which is held 2 days earlier, so content will enter the public domain.

Walsall Grammar Schools

The 11+ supplier for the Walsall, Wolverhampton and Shropshire Consortium is CEM Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring®, at the University of Durham® which sets secondary school entrance assessments CEM 11+®  tests (widely referred to as selective entrance or 11+ exams) for various English grammar schools and regions, including Bexley; Birmingham; Buckinghamshire; CCHS (Essex); Gloucestershire; Henrietta Barnett & Latymer; Reading; Shropshire; Slough; Walsall; Warwickshire, and Wolverhampton. Their main competitor is NFER® (National Foundation for Educational Research®)  who construct new, custom-made selection tests for many schools and Local Authorities.

The Durham 11+ (a phrase we have coined) typically comprises of two 50-minute tests, which take around 60-minutes each to administer (the extra 10-minutes is due to instructions and examples). There is a break of up to 30 minutes between each paper, both of which are administered on the same day, usually, during September of Year 6.  Note: Questions in the test are not asked from a CD. They are printed in a booklet. Just the instructions are played from a CD.

Past eleven plus papers set by CEM Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring® in Durham are not released and cannot be purchased. Usually, two weeks before the test, applicants receive a sample sheet containing example questions.  The Birmingham Walsall, and Warwickshire eleven plus questions contain a mixture of formats.

Since CEM Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring® do not sell any preparation material to the public, material is hard to come by.

Fortunately, we have constructed practice mock tests suitable for CEM 11+ exams. These mock test packs consists of two 50 minute papers as well as answers and are available from the shop. Word Lists and maths lessons are also available in the shop. Obviously, these papers have no connection with CEM Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring® and are not endorsed by this unit at Durham University®.

The 2017 test date for 2018 entry is 18th September, 2017

Under the Greenwich ruling all children, of the appropriate age, have a legal right to take any 11+ exam set by any authority and cannot be denied the opportunity to sit an exam solely on the basis of their address. Many regions do not have catchment areas. Taking 11+ exams outside home catchments does not prejudice the balance and fairness of the testing as all tests are different. To make such a claim would imply a defunct testing process. Remember, schools set mock exams for GCSE and `A` level exams. Mocks for 11+ tests are no different. CEM 11+TM are not aware of any school or authority refusing to allow any child the opportunity to sit their 11+ test on the basis of being out of their home catchment area. It would be unlawful to do so. A Head Teacher of a grammar school has confirmed in writing: `Legally I cannot stop you entering your child for our test.`

Note: Taking a "free mock" will cost the school money. But one would expect financially astute schools to consider the financial implications of setting an early test date. Common sense dictates an earlier test is likely to be used as a "free mock" and this has been well known to occur for many years. . The University of Durham® object to this strategy when it is a legal right. We cannot image why, as if the test is resistant to prepping, what difference would free mocks make? We believe there is no evidence that any 11+ test is resistant to prepping and practise will simply improve performance.

We believe the Warwickshire's multiple test dates compromises their 11+ as questions and content are leaked to late sitters and tuition centres are known to recreate questions, often for their weaker students. Out of area children can sit the tests very late with knowledge of content and move straight to the top of waiting lists. No party can discover the confidential contents of test papers prior to them being used for the first time. Once taken, children will and do discuss content amongst themselves and with parents and tutors, so information enters the public domain and the test is immediately compromised. Content is available on many sites including file sharing sites. This is why Year 6 Sats, GCSE and `A` level exams are not reused after the main testing date.
